Harney Peak is located in the Black Hills National Forest in western South Dakota. Surrounded by the Black Elk Wilderness Area, there are no roads leading directly to Harney Peak. Accessible only on foot or horseback, Harney Peak is about 3.3 miles from the nearest road.

The most common trailhead to Harney Peak is located at Sylvan Lake Resort in Custer State Park. From the trailhead at Sylvan Lake, Harney Peak is located in the Black Hills National Forest and is accessible by hiking the 3.3 miles (one-way) to the summit. There are no roads traversing the Black Elk Wilderness, which includes about 35,000 acres surrounding Harney Peak. The trail to Harney Peak begins in Custer State Park and extends through the Black Hills National Forest to the Harney Peak summit.
