From the trailhead at Sylvan Lake, Harney Peak is located in the Black Hills National Forest and is accessible by hiking the 3.3 miles (one-way) to the summit. There are no roads traversing the Black Elk Wilderness, which includes about 35,000 acres surrounding Harney Peak. The trail to Harney Peak begins in Custer State Park and extends through the Black Hills National Forest to the Harney Peak summit.
